The Design Studio with Professor Phillips

Design Studio is a public high school "design/build" curriculum that sparks rural community development through real-world, creative projects. By learning through a design sensibility, applied core subjects, and "dirt-under-your-fingernails" construction skills, students develop the creative capital, critical thinking, and citizenship necessary for their own success and for the future of their communities.

About Design Studio

My photo
Design Studio
Design Studio is an accelerated high school “design/build” curriculum that sparks community development through creative real-world, built projects. Our studio is housed on the campus of LeCroy Career Technology Center in central rural Alabama. This location offers a central gathering spot for students from 6 local high schools. Over the course of 6 semesters, students can earn both high school credit and up to 18 hours of college credit, while having the opportunity to design, prototype, and build several full-scale creative community projects. Our youth-led public design projects are rooted in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) content to connect in-school learning to out-of-school possibility. By learning through a design sensibility, applied core subjects, and "dirt-under-your-fingernails" construction skills, students develop the creative capital, critical thinking, and citizenship necessary for their own success and for the future of their communities. Design Studio is a different kind of classroom and a new way to look at education.
